50 Shades vs MOTU (fanfic version)

Terrific discussion over at Dear Author. Jane compared 50 Shades vs the 'original' fanfic version called Masters of the Universe. Now there is a lively (and so far wank free) discussion about the ethics of 'filing off the numbers' of fanfic and repacking it for profit. Go check it out.

Kerfuffle @ Smart Bitches...Grab the popcorn

Now, I know this may come as a shock to readers, but Sarah over at SmartBitches TrashyBooks on occasion posts cover snark. *Oh noes! The horror! Why, we would never do such a thing!*

Of course, the attack poodle signal was lit.

Grab some popcorn. This is going to be fun.

Heat Index: 1 out of 5
Release Date: July 26th, 2010
Word/Page Count: 304 pages

The fantasy novel you've always wished Jane Austen had written

Shades of Milk and Honey is exactly what we could expect from Jane Austen if she had been a fantasy writer: Pride and Prejudice meets Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. It is an intimate portrait of a woman, Jane, and her quest for love in a world where the manipulation of glamour is considered an essential skill for a lady of quality.

Jane and her sister Melody vie for the attentions of eligible men, and while Jane's skill with glamour is remarkable, it is her sister who is fair of face. When Jane realizes that one of Melody's suitors is set on taking advantage of her sister for the sake of her dowry, she pushes her skills to the limit of what her body can withstand in order to set things right--and, in the process, accidentally wanders into a love story of her own.

Cersorship, Hypocrisy, Paypal & Hitler

So Dear Author does a regular post about industry news and a kerfuffle about porn, censorship, and hypocrisy breaks out. (Hitler is just a kerfuffle bingo. It never fails that when a kerfuffle breaks out someone always pulls out the 'my [insert family member here] is a lawyer and says you can sue for libel' or Hitler.)

Now, the Erinyes have definite views on the whole shebang, but we are going to let it play out a bit before we step on our soapbox. Still, the post is great and the comments are (for the most part) incredibly interesting.

Book Trailers: New Releases January 22nd-28th

Since it's a rather gloomy Monday where I'm located, I thought we could all use a pick-me-up. In that line of thought, we've decided to start doing a weekly post featuring the trailers of books being released that week. If you ever get a chance to look around, it's amazing to see how much book trailers have progressed, offering such gems like A Monster Calls or Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Actually, the trailer for the latter was what inspired me to go out and buy the book the day it was released.

Behind the cut are the trailers for the books coming out the week of January 22nd - 28th. Hopefully they'll add some inspiration to your reading list. For more January book releases, see our January Coming Soon post.

Flavor of the Week - January 23rd

For this FOTW, I'm going to do something a little different. Instead of posting a picture of a lust-worthy man, I'm going to offer up one of my favorite characters from a book.

Ethan Sullivan (known as Darth Sullivan behind his back) from the Chicagoland Series by Chloe Neill.

Now, since we all have different ideas of what a character looks like in our head, I can't exactly post a picture of him. What I can do, though, is leave you with some lovely quotes that, if you've read the series, will hopefully bring back fond memories. And, if you haven't read the series, maybe the quotes will inspire you to bump it up on your to-be-read list.

“You undo me, Merit. Wholly and completely. You don’t take me at my word. You challenge me at every opportunity. And that means when I’m with you, I am less than the head of this House… and I am more than the head of this House. I am a man.” He stroked my cheeks with his thumbs. “In my very, very long life, I need you more than I have ever needed anything.”
— Ethan Sullivan, Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill

“You can run. You can keep running to the ends of the earth. But I won’t be far behind you. No. I will never be far behind you. Do the things you need to do. Learn to be a vampire, to be a warrior, to be the soldier you are capable of being. But consider the possibility that I made a mistake I regret—and that I’ll continue to regret that mistake and try to convince you to give me another chance until the earth stops turning.”
- Ethan Sullivan, Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill

“I’ll have you in my bed again, Sentinel. And at my side. That is a promise.”
-Ethan Sullivan, Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill

Their power gives them strength...and makes them targets.

Quinn Caldwell is the epitome of a modern goddess. Her power source is the moon, her abilities restricted only by physical resources and lunar phase. She runs a consulting business and her father's bar, serves on the board of the ancient Society for Goddess Education and Defense, and yearns for Nick Jarrett, professional goddess protector and the soul mate she can never have.

But someone has developed the rare and difficult ability to drain a goddess of her powers, and Quinn is a target. With the world thinking Nick has gone rogue (whatever that means) and that Quinn is influenced by "family ties" she didn't know she had, keeping themselves safe while working to find the enemy proves harder each day.

But not as hard as denying their hearts...
